New Pokémon Snap Review
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon and Marc Kaliroff are joined by the one and only teacher, puppet master and, goth Tamagotchi overlord of Goomba Stomp, Marty Allen, for a photogenic smorgasbord of tangible and digital adventures. In the opening segment, Marc talks to the two about his experience using Fujifilm’s latest Instax Mini Link Nintendo Switch compatibility after receiving a review unit of the upcoming Pikachu Edition device bundle from the instant film company. Through quirky filters and a sentimental way of forging Nintendo memories in a nostalgic way, there is no doubt that those looking to print out some retro-styled screenshots will no doubt enjoy the magic of Fujifilm’s products.
In the main event, Cameron and Marty capture their thoughts on Bandai Namco’s latest New Pokémon Snap in a wide overview of their experience with the second entry in the on-rails picture-taking sub-franchise. With a Darwinized tale, adorable creatures, and new faces to discover, New Pokémon Snap is an expected comeback for a long-dormant albeit fan-favorite title. In the end though, perhaps we are all here just to vibe out with some Bulbasaur — and that is all that matters. To close things off with the Indie Spotlight, Cameron talks about his experience playing the scuba diving adventure game Subnautica: Below Zero while Marty checks in with the gang on his adventures over 400 days in The Longing.
For more of Marty Allen you can of course check out his website Martystuff.com!

This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Goomba Stomp Anime Editor Matthew Ponthier joins the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill to discuss Capcom’s record-smashing, monster-murdering hit Switch exclusive, Monster Hunter Rise. But before the gang set out on their hunt, they take some time to bemoan a recent slew of Nintendo disappointments. They mourn the death of Mario on March 31st, complain about the perpetual problem of Joy-Con drift, and lastly, break down Yuji Naka’s fantastically failed comeback, Balan Wonderworld. Cameron shares his experience of losing precious hours of his life trudging through this dismal attempt at revitalizing the 3D platformer – even an accompanying novel adaptation can’t redeem this mess.
Moving onto the main event, Matt takes the stage to tell the gang everything there is to know about Monster Hunter Rise. Touching on everything from its lineup of new and returning monsters to its innovative wirebug mechanics, Matt breaks down how Rise is a worthy entry in this long-running series that does its legacy justice. While it still might not be the most intuitive game for newcomers to get into, it offers more dynamic and exciting gameplay than ever when it comes to taking down these massive foes. Ending things out with the usual Indie Spotlight, Campbell says some words about Lost Words: Beyond the Page, a former Google Stadia exclusive that has now come to Switch. Praising its emotional storytelling and poignantly relatable depiction of childhood grief, Lost Words is a touching platformer whose lackluster gameplay is compensated by its gut-punching emotional storytelling.

NXpress 218: Pokemon Anniversary Celebration, Nintendo Financial Results, and More
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill find themselves in a calm before the storm. A week before the release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury and the deluge of other big February Nintendo games, the gang bides their time by diving into the wealth of Nintendo news and anniversaries from the past week. They start out by going over Nintendo’s recently released financial results to discuss Nintendo’s bestselling games and fantasize about what the future may hold. Is the long-fabled Switch Pro still a possibility? Will Animal Crossing New Horizons become the Switch’s top seller? The financial results might hold the answer!
February marks the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise, so for the main event, the hosts take some time to reflect on their experiences with the series. Whether you’ve been around since the early days of Red and Blue or a fan raised on the DS generations, there’s no denying that Pokemon has had a massive impact on the gaming world. To wrap things up, Campbell shares his experience with Haven, the latest release from the developers of Furi. As a romantic RPG with total support for local co-op, Haven is a beautiful treat that’s sure to please anyone who doesn’t mind a touch of the sentimental in their roleplaying adventures.

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #188: The Game Awards and the Best Games of 2019
Friday Dec 20, 2019
Friday Dec 20, 2019
It’s that time of the year when everyone looks back at all of the great games released over the last 365 days, and the NXpress Podcast is no exception. This week finds Rick, Tim, and Patrick mulling over Goomba Stomp’s list of our Best Games of 2019, debating the merits and placing of some of the choices while generally agreeing that there was a lot to like for Switch owners this year. Along the way we suggest a few substitutions, reflect on the greatness of the Switch games that cracked the list (especially that #1), and look forward to what 2020 might bring.
Of course, before all the positivity and praise, we have a few things to say about the latest iteration of the Game Awards. While Rick enjoyed the brisk pacing, there’s a feeling that the actual awards in this ‘awards show’ might be getting a wee bit short-shrifted. Perhaps a celebration about the past year shouldn’t focus so much on teasers for the coming year? Feel free to give us your opinion on whether The Game Awards succeeds as a tribute to the industry, or seems to be tending toward being just another promotional event. For all this and more, have a listen!

After all the hype, all the outcry, all the disappointment, all the excitement, Pokemon Sword and Shield are finally here, and it’s time for the Nxpress’ resident Pokemon expert, Mr. Tim Maison, to deliver his verdict on where this entry stands in the series pantheon. Joining Tim is casual pokemon observer Patrick, as well as Goomba Stomp’s Nintendo editor (and official Sword and Shield reviewer), James Baker. Will the two franchise fans duke it out over differing opinions, or are there some common-ground criticisms that one might be better able to ignore than the other? Regardless of any negativity slung around at subjects like Gigantamaxing or Mr. Rime (what did he ever do to anyone?), the guys ultimately have plenty of love for the splendid gameplay and lovingly realized world.
Before that debate, Patrick takes a more active role as he reviews Bee Simulator on his quest for the latest indie gems. And while this title may not garner much buzz for its gameplay, solid flight mechanics and loads of sincere enthusiasm for apians makes it work better as a piece of edutainment for younger gamers to enjoy.
For the last segment, Patrick then also review the fantastic 3D platformer New Super Lucky’s Tale, which is a reworked version of the Xbox One game that’s now available exclusively on Switch. While it may not come close to challenging Mario for the throne, Playful has created one of the most enjoyable entries in the genre in a long time. To hear all the superlatives Patrick has for this little fox’s adventure, and for plenty more, have a listen!

It’s a cozy episode this week on the NXpress, as Tim and Patrick are joined by…no one! However, that doesn’t mean the guys don’t have plenty to talk about. Patrick kicks things off with his review of Woven, a pleasant — if blurry — stroll through a woolen world that young gamers should especially enjoy. The cheery, fairy tale atmosphere overcomes the simplicity of the gameplay, but could those fuzzy visuals have made the relaxing experience better and more accessible?
This question leads into the second segment, which finds Tim and Patrick discussing the issue of the importance of game visuals, and how tied they can be to the success of certain games. Sure, everyone loves eye candy, but when do cutting-edge graphics matter more than gameplay, and vise versa? Would games like Luigi’s Mansion 3 or Breath of the Wild be less effective with lesser looks? Does anyone care that Fire Emblem: Three Houses isn’t the prettiest game on the Switch?
Of course, Pokemon Sword and Shield have lately received their fair share of criticism for a perceived lack of major upgrades in the visuals department. In the third segment, the guys take a brief look at this issue, attempt to determine just where the outrage came from, and whether they agree with it. For all this and more, have a listen!

Another big show this week, as Rick, Tim, and Patrick are joined once again by Goomba Stomp writer Campbell Gill to tackle a slew of indie games, as well as get some further Pokemon education from our resident expert about the recent news. Things kick off with an overdue (and tangential) 5 Questions, but soon the guys get down to business. For the first segment, Rick pushes back a tiny bit on the acclaim for Untitled Goose Game, noting that while it’s fun to be a jerk, perhaps controlling a goose isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Next up is the epic A Knight’s Quest, a 3D adventure platformer that Patrick admires for its ambition, but is less enthusiastic about when it comes to execution.
After that, Campbell fills the guys in on Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince, a welcome return to form for the fairy tale franchise that is not only fun to play alone, but even more so with a group. Sure, the puzzles may make you feel stupid at times, but the gorgeous visuals and clever concepts should dull the blow.
Last up is the latest news about Pokemon Sword & Shield from our resident Pokemon guru, Tim Maison. Did anything of value come out of the recent 24-hour streaming event? What’s a Ponyta? And why is everyone so upset about trees? Tim tries to answer these and many other questions while looking forward to the game’s nearing release. For all this and more, have a listen!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #168: 'Pokemon Sword' and 'Shield' Direct
Thursday Jun 06, 2019
Thursday Jun 06, 2019
I hope you're in the mood for Pokemon! This week, Tim and Patrick have a one-on-one about the latest announcements for the franchise, including last week's press conference and the brand-new Direct. First up on the topic, Tim does his best to explain to Patrick how Pokemon Home might work, what the heck Pokemon Sleep is, and why fighting trainers in a new mobile game could be cool. After that, the two tackle the Direct, debating which of the two legendary cover pokemon looks the best, where the new Dynamax mechanic ranks on the list of Pokemon gameplay additions, Tim's dream of giant monster raids coming (mostly) to life, and how the world is visually shaping up. Are we excited for this latest iteration? You'll have to listen in to find out!
Before all the Pokemon gab, however, the guys talk about what they've been playing lately, and muse over the value of certain indies and smaller Nintendo games. Somewhere along the way, Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell is discussed; it's a weird tangent.
For all this and more, tune in!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast #166: 'Detective Pikachu' and 'Mortal Kombat 11'
Thursday May 16, 2019
Thursday May 16, 2019
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast we review Detective Pikachu, which marks the first time any Hollywood studio has attempted a live-action movie adaptation of the popular Pokemon gaming franchise. Is Detective Pikachu just another cash grab or is this movie more than just product placement? We answer this question while also trying desperately to make sense of the convoluted plot. Before that, we set aside some time to discuss Mortal Kombat 11 which Harry calls one of the greatest fighting games ever made and Rick claims features one of the best story modes in the genre. Finally, discuss Super Mario Maker 2, launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch system on June 28. Thanks to a recent direct, we were given a deep dive into the game's new features, including new course parts and tools; a new single-player story mode with more than 100 Nintendo-created courses; new course themes; details about online course sharing*; options to create and play together with others; and information about a special offer for Nintendo Switch Online members. The presentation also covered the upcoming Super Mario Maker 2 Invitational 2019 tournament, streaming live online the weekend before E3 from Los Angeles so there's a lot to cover. It's another jam-packed episode and somehow we managed to keep it under one hour. Enjoy!
