NXpress Nintendo Podcast 324: The Octopath Traveler II Review Extravaganza!
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
Tuesday Mar 14, 2023
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill set out on an exhaustive tri-path podcast to discuss Octopath Traveler II! Before embarking on that journey, though, Marc kicks things off with a much less substantial talking point: Splatoon 3’s underwhelming first wave of DLC! Despite its promise of nostalgia for longtime fans, the Inkopolis DLC provides very little substance and, in turn, not much for Marc to talk about. Here’s hoping the next DLC wave can pick up the pace.
Moving onto the main event, Campbell dives into an in-depth review of Square Enix’s latest HD-2D RPG, Octopath Traveler II! This sequel does the impossible: it recaptures everything that made the 2018 original title great, while making meaningful improvements on the first game’s issues. With eight unique travelers, each with their own unique stories, Octopath Traveler II tells a decentralized RPG story while still maintaining just enough character interaction. That’s not to mention the stunning soundtrack, beautiful art, and moving stories–there’s so much to love that the gang spends an hour talking about the game while barely even touching on the combat! Don’t miss out on what’s sure to be one of the Switch’s best titles of 2023.
Feeling confident after all the love in the Octopath segment? Marc’s here to throw some horror into the mix with a review of Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. Perhaps this title hasn’t aged as gracefully as other horror classics, but for some of us on the show, it might just be too spoopy after all. All this and more in this RPG-sized episode!

This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by Splatoon expert, maker of stuff, and longtime friend of the show, Marty Allen! Join Marc and Marty as they splat headfirst into a deepdive discussion of Splatoon 3, the latest and genuinely greatest entry in Nintendo’s standout cartoon shooter series. From the revamped online play to the expanded single-player campaign, Marty and Marc gush about nearly every aspect of the game in this in-depth conversation. Of course, it’s not long before they get to the most important question of all: who’s the Big Man on the podcast?
After that, the gang hops into a discussion of the latest courses released in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, and receives some insight from the most authoritative of game critics–Marty’s four-year-old cousin, Joe. After racing through all the tracks that this DLC had to offer, the gang closes with an indie spotlight on the adorable Tinykin and delivers the final verdict on Haiku the Robot, a surprisingly atmospheric metroidvania that every fan of the genre deserves to experience during the agonizing wait for Silksong.

This week Rick, Tim, and Patrick continue to talk Splatoon 2, with Rick finally sharing some impressions, as well as offering a comparison to a game he has been warming up to lately, ARMS. Meanwhile, Patrick shares some building frustrations with Splatoon 2's tendency to place restrictions on the player, and Tim tries to beat back the growing tide... After that, the guys do a rundown on some news, including the newly-announced Samus Returns 3DS, as well as the ongoing saga of amiibo availability (please Nintendo, make sure those Metroid figures are heavily stocked!).
For the final segment, the crew looks back upon one of the best gaming-themed documentaries of all time, The King of Kong, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this month. What makes this look at pride, obsession, and 80s hairdos such a special film? You'll have to listen to find out!

This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Katrina Lind joins Patrick and Tim for a full review of Splatoon 2, the latest hit for the Nintendo Switch! We talk weird Inkopolis memes (keep it clean, people), being forced to play with weapons we hate (do people really like the Slosher?), and gush over our favorite modes (Salmon Run = awesome). We also relate some of our stranger (and funnier moments from a weekend of splatting, and someone gets jealous that he hasn't been invited to the cool kid's team... Yes, there are some things Nintendo could have done better with this sequel, but in the end, there's plenty of gooey love for one of the company's best new IPs. From the single-player campaign to Turf War and beyond, we cover all the ground and managed to avoid getting cooked. Have a listen!

This week, Patrick Murphy returns to the podcast to give us a full report of his experience competing in the 2015 Nintendo World Championships qualifying round. After which we all sit down to discuss Splatoon, a new online multiplayer shooter from Nintendo. Leave it to Nintendo to make a shooter that isn’t actually about shooting people.
