NXpress Nintendo Podcast 263: Game of the Year Extravaganza!
Friday Dec 24, 2021
Friday Dec 24, 2021
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill celebrate the gaming community’s most cherished holiday tradition: deciding which game is the year’s best. Although the gang may or may not have played any of the year’s biggest releases, that doesn’t stop them from running down Goomba Stomp’s two-part Game of the Year list. The hosts walk through each one of this year’s 30 winners, ranging from indie darlings like Loop Hero to triple-A megahits like Resident Evil Village. This conversation goes so in-depth, we had to split it into two segments!
While there’s certainly a good mix of nominees from third-party developers, Nintendo fans certainly won’t complain about our ultimate #1 Game of the Year winner. 2021 was certainly a jam-packed year for fans of the Big N and for the industry in general, so it’s exhilarating to think about what the future may hold. Tune in for a sweeping discussion that covers the very past of this past year while looking toward bright times ahead!

NXpress Nintendo Podcast 262: Indie World December 2021 Reactions

Sunday Dec 19, 2021
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill serve up a compact yet jam-packed episode brimming with hot takes about Nintendo’s last Direct presentation of the year, December 15’s Indie World showcase. Stuffed with incredible indie games from start to finish, this latest direct had a little something for everyone (especially if you’re a fan of a certain pup with a paintbrush). Starting things off with a bang with the Chrono Trigger spiritual successor Sea of Stars, the gang walks through every announcement of the show, including the emotional gut punch of After Love EP, the delightful surprise of Dungeon Munchies, the boardgame mysteries of Let’s Play! Oink Games, and the horrifying debut of Omori. There may not have been a giant dump of shadow drop releases as in previous directs, but at least Spring 2022 will be positively stacked!
In the final segment, Cameron takes a break from all the indie conversation by talking about another indie game–none other than Devolver Digital’s Loop Hero, which has just made its long-awaited debut on Switch. As tough as it may be to put into words, Loop Hero delivers a strategic experience unlike anything else on the market–and of course, it’s a perfect fit for Switch!

NXpress 261: Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain Review

Wednesday Dec 08, 2021
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill serve up a brainteaser of an episode with a review of the recently released Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain. This competitive yet educational multiplayer party romp may not have gotten the publicity normally befitting a first-party Nintendo release, but despite its obscurity, it might just end up being one of the best multiplayer games on Switch. Marc schools the gang on all the lessons to be learned from Big Brain’s surprisingly competitive yet endlessly accessble minigames, heaping praise on this inventive title. Don’t miss out on what could be the Nintendo sleeper hit of the year!
Next up, Cameron gives the hosts a spotlight on Unsighted, an indie action adventure game built in the vein of 2D Zeldas and Hyper Light Drifter. Set in an apocalyptic world where every single NPC has a finite amount of time before reverting to a primal, dangerous state, Unsighted tasks players with making tough decisions and offers an immensely rewarding experience for those who can make it through its many challenges. All this and more in a short but sweet episode before the end-of-year insanity sets in!

Ready to dig in? This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by Yacht Club Games’ marketing manager, Celia Schilling, for a wide-ranging interview about all this Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon ahead of its December 13 release. Pocket Dungeon represents an exciting moment for the Shovel Knight series, effectively inventing a new genre and bringing Yacht Club’s mascot hero to the world of puzzle gaming for the first time. Celia gives the host a detailed breakdown about how the game came to be, what it takes to keep the game interesting for players of all skill levels, and why the Trouple King is so adorable–all this and more!
Be sure to stay tuned for Marc’s quick indie spotlight on the delightful A Short Hike, a wonderfully relaxed game that the hosts take turns celebrating–before devolving into a discussion of backlogs, Persona 5, and the struggles of adulting. What can you say, they really dug themselves into a hole…
