NXpress #17: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Never Alone
Thursday Jul 30, 2015
Thursday Jul 30, 2015
This week we take a break from discussing Nintendo’s first party games and focus on some indie gems instead. Up first is our discussion of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, a twisted, rogue-like, twin-stick shooter/dungeon crawler developed by Edmund McMillen. Ending the show is our review of Never Alone, an atmospheric puzzle platformer that explores the harsh and dynamic world of Alaska Native stories. Using gaming as a medium to tell a beautiful, classic story, Never Alone was developed by Upper One Games (the first indigenous-owned video game developer and publisher) in partnership with the Alaska Native community, and is faithfully based on the folklore of the Iñupiat people. Joining us this week is special guest Mariko McDonald from GamerWife.com.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55. He was an immensely influential figure both within the industry and with Nintendo fans, and he will be forever missed. Iwata-san’s leadership has been a strong force for good in the gaming industry and so today we honour him in our main event. Closing the show is our review of Super Mario World, arguably one of four Mario adventures that could easily be listed within the lexicon of the greatest games ever made. NXpress Nintendo Podcast #14: Deciding Nintendo’s best console
Wednesday Jul 08, 2015
Wednesday Jul 08, 2015
The Virtual Boy proved to be a dismal failure for Nintendo but in many ways, it was ahead of its time. The Nintendo DS came at the perfect time, long before mobile games, and remains the second best-selling video game console of all time (beaten out by the PlayStation 2). The Gameboy is the toughest gaming console ever made, sturdy enough to survive a bomb. The Game Boy Advance helped further advanced sprite-based technology. WII led the “console wars” selling more than 101 million units in the first quarter of 2012. Wii U is still home to four of the greatest games Nintendo has ever made. Nintendo 3DS keeps Nintendo relevant as the Wii U suffers in sales. The Gamecube was home to a stellar lineup of fantastic games. Nintendo 64 had a collection of genre-busting, industry-redefining, titles. The NES helped revitalize the US video game industry following the video game crash of 1983 and introduced a plethora of now-iconic video game characters, a ton of accessories and it forever changed the relationship of console manufacturers and third-party software developers. Super NES took the formula established by the NES and made it bigger, faster, and better in every way imaginable. But what is the best Nintendo console? This week we duke it out, and boy does the conversation get heated. Joining us is Sound On Sight contributor Matt De Azevedo.
