Thursday Mar 25, 2021
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, goomba Stomp writer Marty Allen joins the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill to celebrate the first birthday of the game that defined 2020, Animal Crossing New Horizons. Before diving into commemorating one year of island colonization, however, the hosts dive into the recent announcement of the Pikmin series coming to mobile – courtesy of Niantic, the developers behind Pokemon Go. Will this new title feature AR Pikmin hiding in the wild? Will it give you a real-life army of little minions to follow you around? Only time will tell. Next, the hosts chat about the impending end of Mario’s 35th Anniversary on March 31, marking the final day that the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection and Mario 35 will be available for purchase. Is this limited availability a memorable celebration, or is it an arbitrary end to an already-lacking celebration?
Moving onto the Main Event, Marty kicks things off by reflecting on one whole year of Animal Crossing New Horizons. New Horizons was the game of 2020, keeping people connected during a turbulent pandemic and providing peace in a year of social unrest. The hosts exchange notes on their experiences with the game, describing a year preoccupied with building the perfect island and forging lasting personal memories in the game’s world. Even if Campbell and Cameron aren’t on the same hype train as millions of others were when it came to New Horizons, all the hosts acknowledge that there is plenty to appreciate in this adorable animal lifestyle simulator. Closing things out on a decidedly less cutesy note, Marc and Marty shine an indie spotlight on Gnosia, which is essentially what you’d get if you turned Among us into a visual novel and threw in a few RPG elements, plus plenty of other anime and JRPG influences for good measure.

Persona 5 Strikers Review
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill go over a handful of exciting new Switch releases in a short and sweet episode. The gang wastes no time in jumping into reviewing Persona 5 Strikers, the latest Warriors-themed spinoff of a beloved franchise that still sticks true to the main series’ identity. Marc gushes about the game, giving the hosts the rundown about what it offers and answering all their pressing questions. How much does the game blend Persona with Musou gameplay? Can Nintendo players who haven’t experienced the original Persona 5 still find some enjoyment here? Just how much content does the game have, anyway? Marc answers all these questions and more in his rave review!
Next up, Cameron shines an indie spotlight on Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel Without a Pulse, a 2005 cult classic that’s risen from the dead to find a new life (or maybe just some fresh brains) on Switch. This title may have more than its fair share of old-school jank and glitches, but there’s still plenty to love with the game’s relentless quirky charm and personality. Lastly, Marc gives the rundown on Moving Out’s latest “Movers in Paradise” DLC, describing how it offers lots to love for fans of Team17’s smash hit multiplayer romp.

Nintendo Wire and amiibo News creator Jason Ganos joins the show!
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by Nintendo Wire Editor-in-Chief Jason Ganos to celebrate March 10, Mario Day! The hosts start things out by reviewing the recently-released Playing with Power, a Crackle-exclusive documentary that attempts to chronicle the full, century-long saga of the plumber’s innovative house. While the show might elicit mixed reactions thanks to its odd pacing and lack of Nintendo charm, it still offers plenty of nostalgia and fascinating trivia that are sure to please longtime fans as well as those who might not be so steeped in gaming history.
Moving onto the main event, the hosts share their lifetimes of experiences with the Mario series in honor of Mario Day. Each host discusses their starting point with the franchise, whether that was back on the NES, the Wii, or even a Chinese bootleg (it’s complicated). It’s impossible to fully sum up the complete influence that Nintendo’s plumber has had since his debut in the 80s, but the hosts take their time exchanging notes on the vast impact that the series has made on the video game medium. Closing things out with a brief indie spotlight, Campbell chats about Sea of Solitude – Director’s Cut, the Switch-exclusive update of a stylish and emotional adventure that’s sure to resonate with players of all backgrounds.

Nintendo YouTuber Yoshiller Joins the Show!
This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, the next generation of hosts, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by longtime Nintendo YouTuber and mega Pokémon fan Yoshiller to discuss a handful of major anniversaries in the world of the Big N. First up, the gang reflects on four years of the Nintendo Switch, celebrating the incredible lineup of generation-defining first-party games as well as plenty of unforgettable indies and big-budget third-party titles. Whether you’ve been with the console since it launched on March 3, 2017 (or even a little before that) or picked it up later down the line, the hosts highlight the many features and games that make the Switch a platform that’s perfect for just about any kind of player.
For the main event, the boys continue the anniversary party by diving into the recent Pokémon Presents showcase commemorating 25 years of everyone’s favorite pocket monsters. What ensues is a discussion packed with controversial opinions and reactions, as every member of the gang seems to have a different reaction to the reveals of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Will the remakes live up to their source material? Will Legends Arceus repeat the mistakes of Sword and Shield, or will it successfully push the series in new directions? At the very least, everyone can agree that New Pokémon Snap is already a Game of the Year contender. The gang closes out the show by spotlighting the delightfully cozy indie platformer Sir Lovelot and gushing yet again about Hal Laboratory’s Part Time UFO.
