This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Patrick reviews Slayaway Camp, a killer puzzle game where you control Skullface, a psycho slasher bent on slaughtering camp counselors at the title campground. Originally started as an experimental roguelike collaboration between Jason Kapalka (PopCap co-founder, designer of Bejeweled, etc) and Ido Yehieli (of Cardinal Quest 1 and 2), "Slayaway Camp evolved into its current form when they realized that Sokoban-style sliding-block puzzles were enormously tedious... unless they involved gratuitous murder." Meanwhile, Ricky expresses his admiration for Kirby Star Allies, which he calls one of the best in the series and a game that should please old and new fans alike. Finally, Tim tries to understand why the latest Nindies Showcase seemed so underwhelming. Oh, and we also have a brand new theme song courtesy of LFXIV!

Mulaka has already found its way to being one of our favorite titles on the Switch, and this week Rick, Patrick, and Nintendo Editor James Baker sit down with Adolfo Aguirre of Lienzo to talk about the game's inspiration, development, and what's to come for this adventure based on the Tarahumara people of Northern Mexico. Just how much of the story, locations, and minor details are based on real-world lore? What are the difficulties presented to a small development team in a region not normally known for producing video games? And what do modern Tarahumara think of their portrayal? It's an interview full of rich history and the fulfillment of video game dreams, a must for those hoping to pursue their own creative ambitions.
Before all that, however, the guys talk a bit more about the surprising Smash Bros. reveal for the Switch. They analyze a fuzzy trailer still to death, then pick some characters they'd like to finally see battle it out with Nintendo's superstars. For all this and more, have a listen!

You don't have to be a b-boy or b-girl to appreciate Merj Media's Floor Kids, and this week the NXpress crew goes behind the scenes of the Nintendo Switch's breakout breakdancing game in an interview with Eric San a.k.a. Kid Koala. Rick, Patrick, and one of Goomba Stomp's Indie Editors, Kyle Rogacion, all get lost in the rhythm with Mr. Koala, discussing everything from the game's creative spark right up to the crunch time before release. How did the music inspire the animations, and vice-versa? How did the game's breakdance battle storyline come about (and did someone actually get emotional over it)? And where does Galaga fit into it all? This is a wondrous, wild trip that anyone interested in making games will want to listen to.
For the last segment, the guys go over the latest Nintendo Direct, which turned out to be a solid March update that included quite a bit of meaty announcements. We list some of our favorite surprises — including the big one that caught us all off guard. For all this and more, have a listen!

This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, we look back at one year of the Nintendo Switch. In addition, we also enter six more games into our Hall of Fame and set aside some time to briefly discuss Night in the Woods, the colorful and interactive 2D indie hit by Infinite Fall, a 3 person development team – as well as Layers of Fear, the short but beloved first-person horror game that found an interesting twist in the world of classical painting. All this and more.
